ARIES DTP Studentship Proposals
Please carefully read the options below and ensure that you complete the correct form. This year there is two stage project proposal consideration process.
Stage 1: ARIES DTP Institutional Sift
PIs are required to submit the ARIES DTP studentship proposal indicative form_2024 and the ARIES DTP Research Costs Form 2024 to their institutional sift. If successful, they will be required to complete the full ARIES Online Form for their proposal to be ratified by the ARIES Strategy Board.
The closing date for final submissions to the DTP via the ARIES Online Form is midday, 15th September 2023.
Please note that institutional deadlines will be communicated by your institutional representatives.
ARIES Institutional Sift Panel Instructions_2024
Sift panel chairs/institutional representatives to the ARIES Strategy Board are required to send a completed ARIES Institutional Sift Report Form_2024 to aries.dtp@uea.ac.uk by the deadline (12:00; 15 September 2022). For further information on this please read the ARIES Institutional Sift Panel Instructions linked above.
Stage 2: Consideration by ARIES Strategy Board
If project proposal applications are successful at the Institutional Sift stage, PIs will be required to complete the full ARIES Online Form for their proposal to be considered by the ARIES Strategy Board.
Please note all supporting information and the Research Costs Form must be uploaded to the OneDrive Server by midday, 15th September 2022.

Supervisor Eligibility
Please note that ARIES primary supervisors must:
Be employed by, and usually based at, an ARIES hosting partner;
Have a track record of research aligned to the NERC remit, or where an inexperienced primary supervisor is proposed, a more experienced supervisor will need to be appointed on the supervisory team:
Have a record of peer-reviewed publications in the NERC remit in journals that would be deemed “internationally excellent” or “world leading” according to current REF criteria;
Be eligible to be a PhD Primary Supervisor according to their institute’s criteria for institutionally-funded studentships;
Have undertaken approved professional development training in relation to their supervisory role within the last 3 years;
Have undertaken equality/diversity and unconscious bias training in the last two years, and be committed to compliance with relevant sections of the ARIES Equality and Diversity statement;
Have a 100% record of formal progress reporting for at least the previous 12 months for all of their PGR students;
You may not be a primary supervisor for an ARIES-funded DTP student in successive years.
ARIES DTP Research Costs (Research Training Support Grant, RTSG)
ARIES has a notional expectation of £8,000 for Research Cost requests. Research Costs requests do not need to include any funding associated with mandatory ARIES training, and ARIES holds £2,500 for each student, which they may request for conference attendance, travel, and training external to the DTP.
UKRI Terms and Conditions for Training Grants state that ” The RTSG is not intended to relieve [the Research Organisation] of any part of [the Research Organisation’s] normal expenditure.” and “[The Research Organisation] must ensure that adequate facilities are resources are made available for the research training.” For this reason students must have well-founded laboratory resources available where required, that are maintained in good working order by the host for the duration of the student’s study. Equipment costs and computer costs will not normally be considered.
Requested costs should be strictly for the benefit of the student and not to support the research interests of any other individual.
