Haleigh Jorgeson

Profile

I have completed a BSc in Marine Biology and an MSc in Ecology and Conservation. I have 5+ years experience in the applied research and conservation sector, working with a range of endangered species from marine turtles to endemic plants, which led to my current position as a board member of a conservation NGO in Cabo Verde, Africa.  My current PhD project (Using eDNA to assess the impact of decommissioning of offshore structures on marine sediment communities, and the development of an industry-relevant environmental monitoring toolkit), follows on well from my master’s thesis, which was a marine ecosystem-based natural capital framework assessing the impact of offshore renewables and climate change. Hence, my interests lie mainly with assessing the impacts of man-made structures on marine ecosystems and species, from micro- to macro-fauna.

PhD title: Use of eDNA to assess impact of decommissioning on marine sediment communities and the development of an industry-relevant environmental monitoring toolkit.

Using eDNA to assess the impact of decommissioning of offshore structures on marine sediment communities, and the development of an industry-relevant environmental monitoring toolkit.

The main outputs of the project will be a) producing an estimate of biodiversity around man-made structures in the North Sea; b) identifying any contamination to the environment that indicates a leak of hydrocarbons from the decommissioning site; c) development of an industry-applicable environmental monitoring toolkit; d) to develop best-practice guidelines and recommendations for future decommissioning projects
